Farm Volunteer E-mail April 29, 2010
Hello Everybody! Spring is in full swing and we are busy out on the farms. Here are some volunteer opportunities for the first few weeks of May!
Tuesday, May 4 We will have our regular workday at Stenton Family Manor. Hours are from 2-6. We need as many adults as possible on these days to help with both farm labor and working with the kids. At least 15 youth from the shelter come out each time, so the more adult volunteers the better! Please contact me personally if you have any interest in volunteering more regularly at Stenton.
Wednesday, May 5 and Wednesday, May 12 We will be working at the main Awbury Arboretum farm and could use help with farm work. Getting ready to plant tomatoes, weeding, etc.
Tuesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 13 We will also be at Stenton for our afternoon work sessions from 2-6 p.m.. Come out, plant, and play with kids.
Contact me at educator@weaversway.coop if you plan on attending. If the weather is looking inclement for the day, we will cancel the shift. If it is iffy please call me (609-577-1471) or David Zelov (215-983-1616) if you want to check and see if it is still going on.
Lastly, this spring Weavers Way Community Programs is working with the Nationalities Service Center (NSC) to start a community garden for their senior center. NSC is the largest refugee resettlement group in Philadelphia, and NSC seniors have pushed for years to have a space where they can grow culturally appropriate vegetables. NSC has received a small grant and we are pushing to get this community garden/ farm done by late June. Many volunteers are needed for these days and it’s not too far from Mt. Airy. Please mark your calendars and try to come out to the garden at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 5200 N. Broad, Philadelphia, PA.
The dates are:
Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (May 22 rain date) Tuesday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Light snacks will be provided. For further information and to register, please contact Tara or Audrey at (215) 324-7554.
Thanks a lot. Enjoy the heat!
Adam
