The Mt. Airy Bike Collective (MABC) was created to promote cycling in Northwest Philadelphia and is operated solely by volunteers. Members share knowledge and tools to promote broad participation in bike riding, safety, and maintenance. MABC has held workshops on topics such as bike tune-ups to bicycle commuting in the winter. Our experiences range from lifelong cyclists with expertise in repair to novice riders eager to learn basic maintenance skills. During “open hours,” community members are invited to share our space and tools to work on their bikes, and exchange biking-related knowledge with MABC volunteers. We also operate a “Bike Library” program for children. Bikes that have been donated and fixed up are available for families to rent for the summer at a nominal cost.
