Better Ways to Replenish EasyPay
These days, it seems that more restaurants and small businesses are asking customers to pay 3% to cover credit card fees. Meanwhile, credit card companies are charging retailers a wide range of merchant fees. Those free flights you earn with a rewards card are paid for by retailers, who are charged higher fees to accept those cards. It’s a tricky business!
At the Co-op, credit card fees cost us $677,939 last year. On sales of $47.4 million but with slim margins, that figure represents one of our higher expenses outside of labor. The good news is that members can help reduce those costs and get a 2% reward.
Getting paid by the Co-op is the basis of our “EasyPay Pays You” arrangement, in which deposits of $100 or more earn a 2% EasyPay deposit. Years ago, members decided they would rather reward their fellow members than pay credit card companies. We remain committed to this principle of putting money in members’ pockets rather than giving it to credit card companies, and we hope that more members can take advantage of this benefit.
EasyPay is essentially a “house account” that is automatically created for every member; you have the option of depositing funds into this account for shopping at the Co-op. Deposits can be made by cash, check, ACH/bank transfer or a credit card. While it may seem silly to pay for a deposit into an EasyPay account with a credit card, it can still result in fewer fees for the Co-op, since members typically shop multiple times with one EasyPay deposit, which results in fewer credit card taps or swipes.
Still, EasyPay deposits made by cash or check are better for the Co-op, so we give members who do that a 2% reward. If you deposit at least $100 in your EasyPay with cash or check, the Co-op automatically adds 2% to your deposit, so $100 instantly becomes $102. You can make deposits at the register or mail a check.
If you want to pay by credit card or ACH, visit the Member Center and click on “Add Money to EasyPay.” You will see an option to use your credit card or add your bank routing and account numbers for an ACH transfer. Now, that’s easy!
