Hands-on Workshop: Making Dyes from Invasive Plants

Did you know you can create colorful dyes from pesky invasive plants in your garden? Learn about the process of how to use invasive plants from our local forests to dye fabrics! In this hands-on workshop, participants will be provided with an overview of the mordant and dye process. They can make and test natural plant-based dyes from invasive wineberries (Rubus phoenicolasius) as well as roots from oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) on wool and cotton samples. For anyone who brings a natural textile item with, you will be able to experiment with dying it as well. Examples include: socks, bandana, or hair tie made from cotton, bamboo, ramie, silk, wool.

This session will be hosted and lead by Becky Flax, Textile Designer and Anne Bower, Ecologist and Herbalist. The workshop will be held at Weavers Way Germantown Outreach office, located at 326B West Chelten Ave on July 13th at 6:30pm. Please register here
