Norouz, the Persian New Year and a Glimpse at Iran’s Architecture

Thursday, March 24, 2022 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Learn about the Norouz, the Persian New Year and its traditions and also get a glimpse at Iran’s beautiful and historic Architecture.

The Persian New Year or ‘Norouz’ is observed on the Vernal Equinox, which falls, this year, on March 20th. We will begin with an explanation of the traditions of this 3,000-year-old celebration and a video of the Persian Haft Seen; seven symbolic items starting with the letter ‘S’ that adorn every Iranian’s home at this time of year. A slide show of images from Iran’s prolific architecture will follow.

This seminar will be hosted virtually and will occur on Thursday 3/24 from 6:30-7:30pm. A zoom link will be provided to you after registration.

This event will be co-hosted by two Weavers Way members.

Shahriar Eskandari was born in Abadan, the center of Iran’s oil production. In 1980, at the onset of the Iran-Iraq war, his family had to flee Abadan for the port city of Boushehr on the Persian Gulf, where his father served in the Iranian Navy. Shahriar immigrated to Philadelphia in 2011 and is a staff member of Weavers Way. He lives in Chestnut Hill.

Nazie Dana was born and raised in Tehran. She grew up in pre-revolutionary Iran, came to the US to attend college, and ended up staying and raising a family. Other than the ‘90s when she lived in Alexandria, VA, she has called Philadelphia her home. Nazie is a member of Weavers Way and the Co-op Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She lives in Chestnut Hill.
