Weavers Way Workshop: Modern Slavery: Human Trafficking and What You Can Do

Sunday, April 15, 2018 - 4:00pm to 5:30pm

Grounds For Restoration Coffee Company is an organically grown, fair-trade coffee company that donates 100% of its profits to survivors of human trafficking. Come hear from the company's founder, Larry Ackley, about the depth of modern slavery and how we ourselves can make a significant difference.

Four billion people around the world live outside the rule of law, including countless women and children who are vulnerable targets for human trafficking; it's estimated that more than 40 million slaves exist in the world today. The landmark 2014 book "The Locust Effect" demonstrates that the poorest and most vulnerable can have very little hope until they are protected by effective Rule of Law from the epidemic and systemic violence that is their everyday reality. Stunning transformations have occurred worldwide where this model has been applied.

In a discussion, Larry will talk about:

  • What is it like to live outside of Rule of Law?
  • The Locust Effect: Addressing violence against the poor is a precondition for achieving economic development
  • Examples of huge victories that have transformed broken justice systems
  • What the U.S. is doing: the End Modern Slavery Initiative
  • What Grounds for Restoration is doing
  • What can YOU do?

Grounds for Restoration Inc. is a coffee company created to fund restoration care and employment opportunities for trafficking survivors in the U.S. and contribute to the fight against modern-day slavery globally. Larry Ackley holds a Psychology degree and Teaching certification from Princeton University.
